Colorful bottles of a popular Italian lemon liqueur are lined up in the window of a local store. The origin of Limoncello has many theories but it is said to have been commercialized in 1988 by Massimo Canale. His recipe combined multiple herbal ingredients including rose petals, rhubarb, quinine, orange peel, and peppermint to create this bitter drink for salons and cafes around Italy.
